MMC Counseling Services

MMC counseling services is a part of student services. The mission of the counseling service is addressing the psychological concerns of the Myungsung Medical College students.  

What is counseling?

Students seek counseling for personal growth or because they need help managing the challenges in life. Some student’s worry that seeking help means they are “crazy,” “weak,” “poor academic performers,” or “incompetent.” Seeking help from a well trained professional is a wise choice one can made in his life to overcome life’s stress.  The purpose of counseling is to help students manage their problems in living more effectively using their opportunities and resources to excel in life, thereby allowing them to develop to their fullest potential. Counseling helps students identify, understand and solve their problems in a strategic way, dealing with their feeling, thoughts, and behaviors, as well as with the present, past and future. Counseling is a relationship, whether in an individual, family, or group, format that is constructed in a way to promote trust, safety, and lasting change. The nurturing nature of counseling plays the biggest role in facilitating change.

How long is the service?

Some students use the service just for a few visits while others come for ongoing therapy, it depends on the treatment provided and based on individual cases.  The number and frequency of sessions depends on your particular situation, some students feel benefits after one to six sessions, and others need more time.

What is the process to get an appointment?

  • An appointment will be made for aninitial assessment.
  • This first appointment is an opportunity todiscuss immediate concerns and to set goal, prioritize, and plan possible strategies to solve the problem.
  • After this 45-50-minute assessment, the Counselor reviews your needs and determines the best treatment option for your issues and set another appointment.

What about Confidentiality?

All counseling records of MMC students are kept separately from other medical records and will be securely locked in the counseling room.

The counselor will not release information about a student to anyone without permission. Everything discussed in the counseling session is held in strictest confidence. There are exceptions to confidentiality– involving imminent safety concerns or a life-threatening situation. The counselor will always try to speak with the student first and get permission to share any information. If student need to share information to another person, they need to fill out the release of Information form.
